L George, regional secretary, AAEU said, "Privatisation could jack up the user development fee for flyers, which is currently at Rs 166 for domestic flyers and Rs 400 for cross-border flights."
But the government remains undaunted. Despite ongoing protests, the actual privatisation process is picking up pace with reports suggesting bidders including IL&FS transportation, GMR , GVK, Frankport, Essar Infrastructure, Essar Projects and Sahara Group met with key infrastructure development cell officials in Chennai.
While they could not take a tour of the airport due to the protests, sources say they were briefed about the airport and the development work carried out so far. They are expected to submit bid documents by the October 17.
Speaking to CNBC-TV18, Civil Aviation minister Ajit Singh had earlier confirmed the bidding process will soon be completed.
"Request for quotation has already been issued. We are working on the Request for proposal and concession agreements. It is very time consuming, and very extensive consultations have to take place", said Singh.
The government has already set a mid-January deadline to privatise the airport. With time running out fast, the protesting AAEU is now planning to knock on the chief minister J Jayalalithaa's door for help.
